“The sound of wind blowing over the roof of the large temple and through the woods behind the building make you feel horrible…” – Fujimoto Taizo
Even at its windiest moments, the air was relatively still when I visited Sengaku-ji. The temple is now completely surrounded by tall buildings that shield it from the weather (the woods have long since disappeared, too) and the soundscape there at night was oppressively quiet; there wasn’t much to record at all, let alone the strong winds described by Fujimoto. Ultimately, I had to resort to reducing the lo-cut on my recorder to capture the atmosphere I hoped for – after all, what makes a recordist feel horrible if not wind noise?
