Dunnet Head is host to a pretty constant stream of motorists making the pilgrimage for the obligatory quick photo opportunity by the marker. Otherwise, the spot is popular among birdwatchers for its large fulmar colony on the cliffs (I was the only one with microphones out). There are also derelict military buildings nearby. An information sign describes the feel of the area rather well:

"Even today, in Winter or in stormy weather, with the sea battering the cliffs and the wind howling in the deserted buildings, it is only too easy to imagine the emotions of the young servicemen posted here on wartime duties."
