While trying to sleep under a bridge by a small river, I was suddenly alarmed by a loud splashing sound right next to me. I was unable to see what was there, but eventually figured out that it was just some sort of fish attempting to swim upstream to spawn. It would make three big bursts before getting too tired and drift back downstream a little before trying again. Although I recorded several such efforts, the first attempt that began just as I was getting my equipment ready actually turned out to be my favourite as you can hear the stereo spread expand right at the start (I start with both mics in one hand, using the other to set my recorder before separating the microphones out) – an artefact that reminds the listener of the inherent subject abstraction that results from the electroacoustic process that is field recording.
