When I pressed stop on my recorder for the last time nothing special happened. I’m not sure what I was expecting to happen, but I felt like I had just finished something significant and there was no one to congratulate or celebrate with me; All the passers-by carried on as normal and pay no attention to me, and I still had to find a place to sleep that night. This reminded me of why I decided to walk and record the Tōkaidō in the first place: over the years this historic road is disappearing in chunks, and when these chunks vanish they do so suddenly and without any ceremony – just paved over as if what was being covered never meant anything at all.
