about

I visited this garden to record its suikinkutsu, a particularly famous example of Japanese sound culture. Unfortunately, I arrived to find that the suikinkutsu had become overfilled with water due to the heavy rain that had recently begun (and that would continue for pretty much the entire remainder of my journey) and no longer resonated as it should. I recorded the ambience of this garden anyway and listening back I realise just how quintessentially ‘Japanese’ it seems, with its traditional garden sounds – flowing water, birdsong, gravel footsteps, etc. – and the all too common modern sound of an overpowering electronically amplified voice combining the old and new in a way that I find indicative of the nation’s attitude to its own cultural history.
