The name ‘Tōkaidō’ can be used to refer to a number of routes: There is of course the original historic road of the Old Tōkaidō Highway, though this is more often referred to by the Japanese as the ‘Kyukaidō’. Instead, ‘Tōkaidō’ today usually means the motorway of Route 1, but it can also refer to the Tōkaidō train line (either the JR Main Line or the Shinkansen service). There’s also the patchy ‘Tōkai Nature Trail’, a series of hiking routes that roughly – though not precisely – follows the path of the Tōkaidō. In this recording I was sat between the Tōkaidō that is Route 1, and the Tōkaidō that is the JR Main Line.
