It was a beautiful day when I was passing through Okazaki, and I took advantage of the weather to explore the city a little. Visiting a park where the geographer Shiga Shigetaka was buried, I suddenly heard what I thought to be fireworks. One part of the park was full of activity with seemingly hundreds of children running around and playing with balloons that were specifically designed to whistle as they flew through the air. Though this apparently isn’t an invention unique to Japan, I had personally never heard these before and the busy and playful soundscape was one I found quite delightful to listen to.
